| Deputy opinion editor Karen Tumulty normally writes about politics and the personalities who make that business stop and go. But over the course of her career at The Post, and before that at Time, she has also written a fair amount about the Catholic Church and its many challenges. This past week, Karen profiled Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, who in December was named by Pope Francis as an auxiliary bishop in the Washington archdiocese. To say his story is unlikely is an understatement: He came to the United States from El Salvador as an undocumented 19-year-old, human contraband in the trunk of a car. He worked in Los Angeles for two years and moved to the D.C. area, where his first job was as a custodian in a suburban UPS warehouse. He now holds a position of considerable power in a church that has never earned high marks for sharing it widely. "There has not been much by way of good news about the church in recent years," Karen writes. "Catholics, including me, have questioned why we should continue to believe when so many of our leaders have failed us and divided us. But if there is still a presence of God in the brokenness, I think this new bishop has the right idea of where it can be found." Thanks for reading. And please let me know what you think. P.S. We have translated Karen's essay if you prefer to read it in Spanish. (Greg Kahn/GRAIN for The Washington Post) A once-undocumented Salvadoran rises to the top of the Catholic Church in Washington.
