'Matapat' troops aid firefighters

TROOPS of the Army's 53rd Infantry "Matapat" Battalion (IB) have provided manpower assistance during a fire that hit Purok Sidlak in Culo village, Molave, Zamboanga del Sur.

Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera, 53IB commander, said the fire, which broke out around 9:20 a.m. Monday, March 29, razed the house owned by Gemma Papaya.

Herrera said the Matapat troopers, together with the firemen from Molave Fire Station and residents in the area, exerted efforts to put off the fire.

He said those who rendered assistance to the firemen include one squad of soldiers to include two former New People's Army (NPA) rebels led by 53IB Scout Platoon Leader Second Lieutenant John Peter Paul Gaquing and Sergeant Ralfh Montiel.

The Molave Fire Station ground commander is Inspector Herman Ting and assisted by Police Executive Master Sergeant of the Molave Municipal Police Station.

Fire Office 1 Christie Far Gonzales said the estimated damaged to property amount to P200,000. (SunStar Zamboanga)

Kabasalan number 6 most wanted person nabbed

LAWMEN arrested in a law enforcement operation the number six most wanted person in the town of Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay province, the police reported Tuesday, March 30.

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the arrested wanted person as Rodrigo Jasmin Albos III alias Adi, 28, a native of Cainglet village, Kabasalan.

Duco said Albos was arrested around 12 a.m. Tuesday in Purok 33, Agro Compound in Bucana village, Davao City.

Duco said Albos has a standing warrant of arrest for the crime of rape and has been listed as the number six most wanted person in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

He said the warrant of arrest with no recommended bail against Albos was issued on August 8, 2017 by the court of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

He said Albos is currently under the custody of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Field Unit prior turned over to Kabasalan Municipal Police Station. (SunStar Zamboanga)

DOTr transfers functions to MOTC-Barmm

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially turned over its functions and assets to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOTC-Barmm).

The transfer of functions was held through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony on Saturday, March 27, in Cotabato City.

Also, to commemorate the 7th year anniversary of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) signing, the MOTC has inaugurated the acquired one-unit speedboat worth P8.5 million.

MOTC Minister Dickson Hermoso said there will be another unit of speedboat worth P9.5 million to be acquired next year.

"The Marina can do their job as law enforcer, pertaining to registration of vessels safety at sea and increase collection of the Barmm," Hermoso said.

Part of the ceremony was the turnover of the 50-unit fiberglass motorboats from DOTr to MOTC.

"We mark another monumental step toward peace, solidarity, and economic development as it high time to harness the economic potential of Barmm toward the growth over all of this beloved country," DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said.

Tugade added that the motorboats will not only serve as source of income, but can also be used for rescue and operation. (SunStar Zamboanga)
