Sign up for this newsletter Read online Candid conversations about identity in 21st-century America.       By Rachel Hatzipanagos  Email While the theoretical goal of parole is rehabilitation, for the roughly 4.4. million Americans under community supervision it can feel more like an extension of the punishment they experienced while they were incarcerated. Author Jennifer Miller writes about the plight of William Palmer, 49, who is still dealing with the ramifications of a crime he committed when he was 17 years old. When Palmer was released after three decades in prison, he hoped to serve as a mentor, but he said the many restrictions placed on parolees prevented him from truly living his life freely. As The Washington Post series "George Floyd's America" points out, Floyd too found himself in a cycle of incarceration, and he feared going back to prison even in the last moments of his life. A year after Floyd's death, many are still calling for changes in policing in America, but just as important is how people are treated in other parts of the criminal justice system. Also, rock climbers of color are making space for themselves in the great outdoors and teenage punk rockers write a new anthem about "racist, sexist" boys. Thanks for reading!
