54 South African, 2 UK variants found in Zambo Peninsula Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:21 AM PDT THE Department of Health (DOH)-Zamboanga Peninsula confirmed that 56 samples the agency has sent to the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC) tested positive for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) variants that emanated from other countries. The DOH-Zamboanga Peninsula said in a statement that two of the 56 samples tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant (first detected in United Kingdom) and 54 samples tested positive for the B.1.351 variant (first detected in South Africa). One sample also tested positive for the P.3 variant (first detected in the Philippines), which is currently classified as a variant of interest. The health agency said these samples were collected from March 29 to May 5 from Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur. The City Health Office reported that 51 of the 54 samples that tested positive for South African variant are from Zamboanga City. Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite, city health officer, said that of the 257 samples they sent for genome sequencing, 52 were found to be cases of variants of concern, of which 51 were cases of the South African variant, while one case was Philippine variant. Miravite said out of the 52 cases of variants of concern, 37 have fully recovered, while 15 have expired. The fatalities had co-morbidities. As this developed, DOH-Zamboanga Peninsula strongly called on the public for heightened vigilance and to vigorously practice all the minimum public health standards, "as we aggressively push for Covid-19 vaccination roll out with an urgent goal of population protection through mass immunization." It said the concerned local government units have already been informed and further investigations and appropriate actions are being implemented at all levels to heighten the implementation of Prevention, Detection, Isolation, Treatment, and Reintegration, the primary strategy for pandemic response. Agriculture department intensifies sorghum production Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:20 AM PDT THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has embarked on a series of production trainings in Zamboanga del Norte to kick-start the regionwide trainings, as the demand increases for sorghum as one of the primary ingredients for animal feeds. Rad Donn Cedeño, DA regional executive director, said identified under the agency's corn program, sorghum has interventions focusing on the establishment of model farms, and technology demonstrations to showcase sorghum technologies to farmers. Cedeño said the trainings were conducted per district of Zamboanga del Norte on May 26, 27 and 28, respectively. Cedeño said only 25 participants per site were allowed to attend the training, conforming to the safety and health guidelines of the inter-agency task force on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). He said the schedule of sorghum training for other provinces like Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay are already set in the coming weeks. Miguel Aguilar, marketing specialist of Allied Botanical Inc., served as resource speaker and discussed thoroughly about the sorghum production in the trainings conducted in Zamboanga del Norte. Marilyn Penolera, CEO/cooperator of 4SH Mushroom Infinity Farm, one of the potential buyers of sorghum, joined in the activity in all sites in the same province. Penolera encouraged farmers to venture into sorghum production, saying it has sure market with good buying price. 3 nabbed, P110,000 shabu seized in anti-drug stings Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:15 AM PDT LAWMEN have arrested an alleged big-time pusher and two others in separate operations in Zamboanga City and nearby Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Tuesday, June 1. Police Major Shellamie Chang, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the arrested suspects were identified as Gapol Hapil, 28; Edmond Lagudas, 23; and Midzfar Mukammali, 33. Chang said t Hapil, an alleged big-time drug pusher, was arrested by personnel of the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit-9 (RDEU-9) in a buy-bust operation around 6 p.m. Monday, May 31, in Santa Barbara village, Zamboanga City. Confiscated from Hapil were 15 grams of shabu with estimated street value of P102,000, a coin purse, P500 marked money, and a motorcycle. Lagudas was caught in possession of some P2,000 worth of shabu and P500 marked money in a buy-bust operation around 4:40 p.m. Monday in Purok Lapu-Lapu in Poblacion village, Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay. Recovered from Mukammali were some P6,800 worth of shabu, a coin purse, and P200 marked money when arrested in a buy-bust operation around 6:30 p.m. Monday on Callejon Drive in Guiwan village, Zamboanga City. Chang said charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against the suspects, who were detained.
