Presented by the American Petroleum Institute       By Michael Duffy Opinions editor-at-large  Email Question: Who decides whether Supreme Court justices are allowed to dine with six-figure donors to the court's "historical society"  — or accept free hospitality from folks who have nice spreads, say, in the Rocky Mountain West?   Answer: The justices themselves.  And that bit of unchecked privilege and power is at the heart of Ruth Marcus's column about the latest breakdown in ethics at the nation's highest court. In recent weeks, allegations of an unauthorized leak by either Justice Samuel Alito or his wife in a 2014 case involving religious freedom have led to deeper examination of the time justices spend in private hobnobbing with people who have business before the high bench. Lawmakers in Congress have started to sniff around as well. Which is just one reason why the justices should mend their ways and set some new rules to police themselves.
