How it feels: Temperatures spiked yesterday to the mid-to-upper 90s, with humidity making some places feel as hot as 110. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) issued an emergency order, as temperatures may soar even higher today and tomorrow.
How people are coping: James Lowry, 23, was out yesterday selling cold drinks near the Washington Monument. The city set up dozens of cooling centers. And tourists sought relief in Metro stations and museums.

Who? Chad Jones was found guilty yesterday of two felonies and seven misdemeanors, including destruction of government property.
The 45-year-old Kentucky resident helped shatter glass to the House Speaker's Lobby on Jan. 6, 2021, which led to Ashli Babbitt trying to climb through before being fatally shot by police.

Metro is facing a projected $750 million shortfall next summer.

The problem: When federal pandemic aid runs out in July 2024, Metro faces a catastrophic budget gap caused by increased telework and ballooning personnel costs. This could lead to layoffs and reduced service.
What's next? Regional governments have met in recent weeks to discuss the projected shortfall. General Manager Randy Clarke has brought Metro back from a train shortage and addressed fare evasion but faces the challenge of fundraising in his second year on the job.

Metro is rolling out all-door bus boarding this fall.

What to know: Metro will install new fareboxes to allow all passengers to enter from both doors on buses, officials said yesterday. The initiative will debut in about a third of its fleet later this year.
Why? The transit agency hopes to speed up the boarding process and decrease wait times and delays.
